Somehow I actually knew that for both of them...no idea why! I’ve always thought the Pajero doesn’t really look very Pininfarina at all...

I don’ t think it designed by Pininfarina at all but the Euro market Pajeros were manufactured by Pininfarina.

Kind of a similar situation with the Lancia Beta Zagato. Zagato didn’t design the targa version (Pininfarina did) but the conversions were done at Zagato.

This doesn’t answer your question at all, but o ddly enough there are a fle et of them in Indianapolis. I think someone on Oppo even rented one awhile back.

You are right about the Beta Spider – i n d e e d a conversion* of Beta Coupé s hell s b y Zagato according to a Pininfarina design – but the o r iginal Pajero Pinin was not only bult, but also designed by Pininfarina. Mitsubishi made quite a song and dance about it, back in the day.

Yours is a very relevant point though. The Alfa Romeo SZ, f o r e x a m p l e , was essentially designed by Robert Opron – of SM fame – at Fiat’s Centro Stile, whereas Zagato was in charge of its manufacture; similarly, the Bertone 262C was designed by Volvo, but built by Bertone.

* According to people who restore them, it seems Zagato’s workmanship was extremely shoddy in non-visible areas.

I have a suspicion that Alfa knew the SZ was going to be controversial so they played up the Zagato angle as a scapegoat.

As an Australian I had no idea. We don't have the little electric things and that Pajero is sold as the iq for us. And not built by pinin
